Relay interpreting is also known as Indirect Interpreting- a variation of conference interpreting. It 
is often used in conferences or events where the attendees speak different languages and there is a need to render the message into their own language, although not necessarily to a language that is common to everyone. It is also extremely useful if the listeners speak uncommon languages.
How does it work?
The interpreter listens to the speaker and renders the message into a common language. The interpreter then turns to his group of attendees and interprets the message using the group’s language.
Here’s a more concrete example. The speaker talks and the first interpreter would then render the message in the English language – common to every interpreter in the room- and that’s when the interpreters turn to their target language group and interpret the same message depending on the language they speak – Spanish, Chinese, French, etc.
This type of interpretation is only used when needed. One reason why people don’t recommend this type of interpretation is it takes too much time to get the message across to everyone in the room.
Another reason is that there is a greater risk of inaccuracy given the number of interpreters and the number of languages the message is being rendered to which may result to greater chance that information may be distorted or omitted.
