Mandarin
Mandarin, literally meaning “speech of officials”, is a variety of the Chinese language. It is spoken by about 1.3 billion people, most of whom are located in China, Taiwan and Singapore where it also holds official status. In China, it is also “pŭtōnghuà” meaning common language, “bĕijīnghuà” meaning Beijing language, or hànyŭ” meaning Han language. Mandarin is the basis of written Chinese.
