Relay interpreting happens when more than one interpreter is needed to do the job.
It’s used during an event where there are multiple target languages. There is no one common language to all the members of the audience. Finally there is no interpreter who can interpret in all those languages. Relay interpreting is especially useful when involving rare languages.
Essentially, this is how relay interpreting services work:
The speaker addresses the audience in language A. Interpreter 1 converts the message to language B for language B- speaking people in the audience. Then, interpreter 2 converts the message to language C for language C- speaking people in the audience.
The same happens in cases where there is no available interpreter to interpret language A to language C. However, there is one who can interpret language B to language C.
Relay interpreting is also know as indirect interpreting.
