The Chinese Language

Chinese is a family mutually unintelligible languages. They are known as regional languages or fāngyán, dialects of Chinese or varieties of Chinese. That’s about 1.2 billion native speakers of one or more variations of the language (as of 2001), with Mandarin being the most widely spoken variation. It mostly spoken in China, Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia.

Chinese Translator

With China bagging the most populous country in the world, it is no surprise that there is a need for Chinese interpreter (s) everywhere, including London. Many tourists, immigrants and migrant workers are in need of a professional who can help them deal with important meetings.

When hiring a Chinese interpreter, it is important to find out first the variety in which you need him to interpret. Chinese is classified into seven dialect groups:

  •  Standard Chinese is the standard version of Mandarin  in Beijing. It holds official status in China, Taiwan and Singapore.
  • Wu, including Shanghainese – Wu has an estimated 80 million speakers.  Other Wu dialects include Ningbo, Wenzhou, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Jinhua, and Yongkang.
  • Gan – Gan, also known as Jiangxnese or Komese, is very close to Hakka in its phonetics. People speak this  in Jiangxi province and populations in regions such as Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, and Fujian.
  • Xiang – Xiang or Hunanese is a group of Chinese varieties that are linguistically similar to each other.  Ther eare five main Hunanese dialects: Chang-Yi, Lou-Shao, Hengzhou, Chen-Xu and Yong-Quan
  • Another classification, Li-Rong, also distinguishes three more groups:
  • Jin, previously included in Mandarin
  • Huizhou, previously included in Wu
  • Pinghua, previously included in Yue

Make sure that your Chinese interpreter is well- versed in the dialect or variety that your need. Also, it is always best to hire someone who speaks the language natively. This will be easier for your interpreter to identify and interpret or translate cultural nuances and local slang, as well as political or social references.
