Welsh: An Introduction

Cymraeg or y Gymraeg, or Welsh, has been in existence ever since the 6th century.

Welsh also has subtle similarities to Irish, Manx, and Scottish Gaelic despite its distant relationship.

The poems of Taliesin are some of the earliest examples of Welsh literature. The poems tell the story of a 6th century king from modern day southern Scotland. Another example is Y Gododdin by Aneirin, which narrated the 600 AD war between the Celts and Northumbrians.

English to Welsh Translation: The Importance of a Qualified Linguist

Welsh is a minority language in the United Kingdom. There are a little over 700,000 Welsh speakers worldwide. Measure where taken to keep the language alive.

Here is the challenge if you need English to Welsh translation: A recent study showed that only half of the younger generation – those aged between 16 and 24 years – consider themselves fluent Welsh speakers, and only one-third of them use the language when talking to their peers. Census figures also show that there has been a decline in the number of speakers in Wales. This implies a high demand for translators who can do English to Welsh translations.

These numbers have led to a more vigorous campaign to preserve Welsh. However, this also means that it is rare to find a good Welsh translator for various official document translation services.

Welsh is also a unique type of language. Most languages follow the structure of Subject-Verb-Object, as in English, or Subject-Object-Verb, as in Japanese. Welsh, however, follows Verb-Object-Subject in its word structure. Word modifications are also done in the beginning of the words, instead of in the end, to indicate various grammatical features.

The vocabulary is not as difficult. Generally, the words are of Brythonic origin. Many words are loanwords from English. The spelling, however, may make them seem unfamiliar. Welsh borrows many words from Latin as well.

Welsh uses the Latin alphabet composed of 28 letters, where “w” and “y” are additional vowels to the more common “a”, “e”, “i”, “o”, and “u”.

In addition, Welsh has two registers: colloquial and literary.
