Introduction to Urdu
Believed to have been constituted in the 1600s in Central Asia, Urdu is now the official language of Pakistan. The word “urdu” means “camp” or “army” in Turkish. It was used by Muslim soldiers as their communication tool during their conquest for lands in other countries.
The development of Urdu only happened in recent centuries since Persian was preferred in the North Indian Muslim courts. However, despite its late development, Urdu holds a rich literature with many notable artists. In fact, Urdu has the largest collection of religious literary works on Islam and Sharia. This includes interpretations and translations of the Qur’an, spirituality, history, Fiqh, commentaries on the Hadith, metaphysics and Sufism.
Non religious literary work include fiction and non fiction. There are different genres in Urdu secular prose: the dāstān or tale, the afsāna or short story, saférnāma or travel story, mazmoon or essay, sarguzisht or a narrative account, inshaeya or satirical essay, murasela or editorial, and khud navvisht or autobiography.
Urdu literature is also rich in music and poetry. In fact, it is one of the leading languages used in poetry in Asia for centuries.
The Need for a Good Urdu Translator
Today, there are 490 million Urdu speakers around the world. 104 million of them speak only Urdu (not Hindi), and 66 million are native speakers.
With this much population of Urdu speakers and the rich collection of Urdu literature, it is no wonder there is a constant need for Urdu to English translations.
Urdu speakers are not necessarily Urdu translators. Getting your bilingual friends as language translators can also pose a lot of issues, since they may neglect to consider important factors in their translations. Qualified and experienced translators are linguists with degrees and accreditation. They have studied in great length and detail the complexities, structure, syntax, grammar and writing system of the languages they are certified to translate.
