What a Portuguese Translator Needs to Know

Portuguese dialects generally differ in accent and vocabulary. However, there may also be grammatical differences between Brazilian dialects and other dialects.

Interpreters and translators also need to know the phonology of the language. The Portuguese phonology is very similar to that of French, Catalan, Occitan, Franco-Provençal, Sardinian and Southern Italian dialects.

The vowels generally follow the the seven vowels of vulgar Latin. There are a maximum of 9 oral vowels (Brazilian Portuguese has 8), 5 nasal vowels, 10 oral dipthongs and 5 nasal dipthongs.

Portuguese grammar has preserved many verbal inflections from Classical Latin, in fact, more than any other Romance language. The Portuguese translator must note that the verb is also the most definitive aspect of Portuguese grammar.

When making official document translations in Portuguese, one must also know the writing system. In the Portuguese writing system there are used 26 letters of the Latin script. There are also several characters with diacritics that are used, although they are not counted as separate letters.
