Danish Interpreting Services

The Danish Language

Danish has about 5.5 million speakers and holds the official status in Denmark. It is also a recognized minority language in Germany and Greenland. Perhaps the most noticeable characteristic of Danish is that it is mutually intelligible with Norwegian and Swedish. In fact, Danish was the official language in Norway until 1830, and of Iceland until 1944.

Danish is also highly characterized by the influences from other languages. Low German dialects made a lot of impact in Danish during the Middle Ages. French loanwords influenced Danish in the 17th century, while the 19th century (onward) saw that English words have also made an influence in the Danish vocabulary.

Danish, unlike Swedish and Norwegian, only has one regional speech norm or dialect. In fact, more than 25% of its speakers live in the metropolitan area of the capital, Copenhagen. The dialect spoken in and around this area is referred to as Standard Danish. The country’s major businesses, government offices and other institutions are mostly located in the capital, contributing to the highly homogeneous dialect.

Danish Interpreting Services

More than the language’s history and vocabulary, any linguist who will do Danish interpreting services must be familiar with the language’s sound system.

Danish phonology is prone to reduction and assimilation, in comparison to its written form. This applies to both vowels and consonants, and even to the most formal form of the standard language. Stød, a rare prosodic feature meaning “push” or “thrust”, is also present in Danish.

Stress is phonemic and can distinguish the difference between completely different words. For example: billigst is stressed as [ˈbilist] which means “cheapest” and bilist is stressed as [biˈlist], meaning “car driver”.

Here is another important language feature one needs to understand when doing Danish interpreting services: phonetics, that is, both vowels and consonants. In the modern forms of Danish, there are 17 distinct vowel sounds and 21 consonant variants.
